June 09--JOHNSTOWN -- Warm weather and outdoor concerts just seem to go hand in hand.

The annual Concerts in the Park series will open June 21 -- the first day of summer -- with the Johnstown Classic Rockers taking the stage.

Subsequent concerts will feature Whiskey River Panhandlers on July 26 and Jazz in Your Face on Aug. 23.

All three performances are scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Central Park Gazebo in downtown Johnstown.

The music series is sponsored by The Tribune-Democrat and Johnstown Magazine, and Somerset Trust Co., which underwrites the music series.

Mary Anne Rizzo, director of advertising sales for The Tribune-Democrat and Johnstown Magazine, said the concerts are a great way to spend an enjoyable evening out.

"This is a community event, and we want to encourage people to come to downtown Johnstown," Rizzo said. "You get to hear some great music from popular area bands at no charge."

To accommodate concertgoers, downtown restaurants are being encouraged to stay open later so people can grab dinner or a drink before or after each show.

Roberta Lohr, senior vice president of marketing at Somerset Trust, said the bank has been involved with the music series for about 10 years and continues its involvement because of the joy the concerts bring to the community.

"Downtown Johnstown is a great place and Central Park really is a gem," Lohr said.

"We wanted to do something for the people who live in downtown and also make it a great place to be and an attraction for people."

In addition, water and popcorn will be given away courtesy of the bank at each of the three concerts.

Lohr said each concert typically attracts hundreds of people.

"Whether you like jazz and swing, classic rock or folk, there's something for everyone," she said.

"The best part is it's all free, so bring a lawn chair or blanket and have a relaxing, fun evening."
