Big water leak closes Modesto's Gallo Center for the Arts

June 09--A water leak has closed the Gallo Center for the Arts on the day ticket sales were supposed to begin for the upcoming season.

According to CEO Lynn Dickerson, a clamp on an ice machine on the center's second-floor ice machine gave way sometime early Sunday.

"It just ran and ran and ran," Dickerson said. The arts center was dark Sunday, so the problem wasn't spotted until employees arrived at 7 a.m. Monday.

Dickerson, attending a family event in Texas this week, has been getting regular updates from her staff.

"The first floor's flooded, the second floor's flooded. Paint is coming off the walls," she said. "It's a big, terrible mess."

The theaters themselves escaped damage for the most part; a Creation Station art camp in the Foster Theater is going on this week. And no events are planned until Saturday, when 5678 Dance Company has rented the center.

"I'm hoping we will be able to go on with that." Dickerson said.

The big problem right away is the box office, which isn't operating.

Ticket sales for the upcoming season went on sale today. Though tickets can still be purchased online, Dickerson said phone and in-person sales are closed.

She is hoping to get a makeshift box office operating Tuesday, but it depends on getting the phones, computers and printers back online.

"Everybody's there, trying to assess the damage," she said.

We will have more on this story later today.
