June 07--COVENTRY -- Coventry is among several towns honored by the Connecticut Interlocal Risk Management Agency for its efforts towards risk management.

CIRMA, which is owned and governed by members of the Connecticut Conference of Municipalities, provides risk-management services to self- insured cities, municipalities and public agencies.

Members are honored for their outstanding achievements in risk management.

According to Coventry Town Manager John Elsesser, the town reduced the number of lost workdays by 77 percent over the past three years.

"So when people ask what we're doing, we're trying to get costsavings wherever we can," he said during the May 20 town council meeting.

Awards were given in the following categories: substantial impact on loss cost factors; sustained improvement in risk management; new and innovative risk management initiatives; establishing risk management as an organizational priority; outstanding commitment and results from safety and health committees; and exceptional property management.

The award is significant for various reasons, according to Elsesser.

"First, it means that our employees are doing a really good job, especially the workers," he said. "It means they're working safe, they're working smart."

"Second, it means the management staff is doing a good job of maintaining a positive and safe atmosphere," Elsesser said.

He said he appreciated the employees for working "safer and smarter."

"A lot of effort by a lot of people ultimately will help us do our jobs in a more cost-efficient manner," said Elsesser.

According to him, it has been several years since the town received an award from CIRMA.

"We got an award probably 10 or 12 years ago from CIRMA, but it wasn't quite the same thing," said Elsesser.

Windham also received a 2014 risk management achievement award from CIRMA.
