June 07--Last summer's locally filmed drama "The Perfect Summer" surfed onto DVD shelves this week, kicking off a summer that will see a slew of locally shot movie and TV projects becoming available to own in the coming months.

The Christian-themed surfing film, filmed in Wrightsville Beach and produced by locally based production company Swirl Films, is now available for purchase through ChristianBook.com, a specialty media website. Starring Eric Roberts and "American Idol" contestant Jason Castro, the film follows a young city boy who moves from Chicago to a small beach town where he struggles to fit in. A wider DVD release is expected later this summer.

Available this week is "A Short History of Decay," a dark comedy starring "One Tree Hill's" Bryan Greenberg as a failed writer returning home to care for his ailing parents (Linda Lavin and Harris Yulin). Directed by Michael Maren, the film was shot in fall 2012 in the Wrightsville Beach area.

"A Short History of Decay" made its Southeastern premiere at the Cucalorus Film Festival last fall and screened at Cinematheque in May as part of a limited theatrical release.

The film also is available to buy or rent on iTunes. DVDs of the film can be ordered through Amazon.com.

Fans of the Lifetime original series "Witches of East End," which filmed its pilot in Wilmington last summer, will be able to pick up the show's 13-episode first season June 24. Following filming on the series' pilot episode, production moved to Vancouver were the remaining episodes were filmed. Lifetime has ordered a second season of the bewitching show set to premiere July 6.

Finally, Sept. 1 will mark the release of "Newton's Grace," a film that documents the journeys of slave ship captain and pastor John Newton, who would go on to write "Amazing Grace."

The film, produced locally under the title "But Now I See," filmed for five days in Wrightsville Beach last August before traveling to South Carolina and Nova Scotia to finish filming.

Like "The Perfect Summer," this faith-based film will be released through ChristianBook.com. It is also available for pre-order on Amazon.
