June 06--Kaka'ako Agora, a newly created public space project devoted to arts and culture, kicks off an eclectic series of programs on art and cultural affairs this weekend.

Located in a warehouse at 441 Cook St., Kaka'ako Agora will play host to informal musical and theatrical productions and architectural and city planning presentations. The project was conceived by Kamehameha Schools, owner of the site, and Interisland Terminal, a collective that presents installations and exhibits in art, design and film.

Kaka'ako Agora's June Kaboom calendar reflects Kakaako's development as a hub of arts, architecture, design and culture. Its opening program at 8 p.m. Sunday will be a screening of the documentary film "If You Build It," which details the efforts of two designers who work with high school students in Bertie County, the poorest county in North Carolina.

That will be followed by a 6 p.m. Monday masterclass, "Acting is Breathing," presented by Kumu Kahua Theatre; a taiko drumming exhibit at 7 p.m. Wednesday; a film featuring masters of Hawaiian culture at 7 p.m. Wednesday; and a preview of Hawaii Opera Theatre's "The Mikado" at 6 p.m. Thursday.

"The Human Scale," an examination of how cities are built and used by Danish filmmaker Andreas Dalsgaard, screens at 7 p.m. Friday; and an all-ages music showcase is planted from 3 to 9 p.m. Saturday.

Though located in a warehouse, Kaka'ako Agora's interior space was designed by Atelier Bow-Wow, a Japanese architectural firm that has designed similar projects worldwide. The firm will make an appearance along with local architectural firms at 6 p.m.June 20 for Pacific Architecture Night -- Summer Edition.

Other highlights scheduled for this month include a weeklong printmaking project featuring artists from Honolulu Printmakers. The organization will have receptions at 6 p.m.June 17 and at 5 p.m.June 23.

For general amusement, Honolulu Night Market will make its monthly appearance at 6 p.m.June 21 and the Art+Flea will be held at 5 p.m.June 26.
