June 06--The Clearwater Watershed District, a 159-square-mile area stretching from Clearwater Lake to Watkins, earned an Environmental Initiative Award for Natural Resources for its Targeted Fertilizer Application Project.

The ongoing partnership aims to keep excess runoff out of lakes and rivers while offering farmers a cost share to test soil for nutrient requirements and then apply fertilizer at variable rates. The district also worked with ag co-ops. It tracked application, yield, nutrient export to waters and cost savings.

The 2009 pilot study found benefits in all areas. Cole Loewen of the Clearwater River Watershed District said about 9,000 acres have been enrolled in the project; the goal is to enroll 16,000 acres.

The Environmental Initiative Awards honor innovative projects that achieve extraordinary results.
