Nikkei ends almost flat, market top-heavy after recent rally

The Nikkei stock index ended Friday almost flat as trading oscillated between selling to lock in recent gains and buying on hopes for a further rise in stocks following the European Central Bank's additional monetary easing.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average ended down 2.13 points, or 0.01 percent, from Thursday at 15,077.24. Meanwhile, the broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange finished 1.82 points, or 0.15 percent, higher at 1,234.57.

Major gainers included marine transport, insurance and machinery issues, while major decliners were communication, retail and pharmaceutical issues.
