June 04--The first Friday in June is National Doughnut Day that was created by the Salvation Army in 1938 to honor the volunteers who served doughnuts for the soldiers during World War I. To celebrate the day you can find a new flavor donut and free donuts locally at the following:
-- Bennett's Fresh Roast will offer a free doughnut (while supplies last) with the purchase of any size coffee from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 2011 Bayside Parkway, Fort Myers, 239-332-0077 and 1020 Periwinkle Way, Sanibel, 239-312-4651.
-- Courtyard at Ridgway Bar & Grill is selling Bomboloni alla Nutella crema, its newest creation of a delicate brioche donut filled with a light, white chocolate mousse and Nutella cream, for $3 all day (while supplies last) starting at 7 a.m. at 1300 Third St. S., Naples. This pastry has such a unique taste that satisfies your sugar urge it will soon be as famous as Dominique Ansel's cronut. Be one of the first to get a Bomboloni before the lines start to extend up the street. Starting next week the treat will be sold starting at 5 p.m. only on Fridays but since this week is National Doughnut Day and the inaugural of the donut chef Tony Ridgway will have them ready at 7 a.m. Information: 239-262-7999
-- Dunkin' Donuts will celebrate the day with a free donut of your choice with any beverage purchase. The restaurants are celebrating summer with its new Blueberry Cobbler Donut that is a yeast shell donut with a blueberry filling, white dipping icing and coffee cake streusel topping. Visit local restaurants to try one.
-- Trackside Donuts & Café, 28001 Old 41 Road, Bonita Springs, will be giving away a free glazed doughnut from 6 a.m. to noon to anyone who visits the café on Friday. Information: 239-390-1400
