Granite WMS - warehouse software that keeps it simple

June 30, 2014

Some of the common mistakes made in implementing a warehousing solution include automating a broken warehouse, overselling the system to the users and management, and unrealistic software expectations. When a company embarks on a WMS solution it frequently falls into these traps how else do you justify the money to be spent on an all singing and dancing solution to your warehouse problems?

Aside from the technical implementation of a WMS, the soft factors of change management, operator training and on-the-floor support of operators all add strain to the project. Loading the project with technical complexity and massive process changes create stress and conflict in the operational team which may just be too big a bite to swallow.

Old friends like strict housekeeping, effective labelling, clear simple processes and caring for operators all help to change the culture in the warehouse and in so doing, clear the path to successful, rapid WMS implementations. The software itself is not the "silver bullet" but the project has the potential to change the entire operation.

The implementation team from Cradle Technology Services understand that even though the Granite WMS solution is a simple system and can be set up within a couple of weeks the process of implementing goes beyond simply setting up software. Operators need to get used to new processes, mobile barcode scanners, new labelling systems and, most importantly, they need to understand the importance of scanning everything, every time something moves.

Hylton Tutton, senior implementation consultant at Cradle Technology says: "Put yourself in their shoes these operators have their entire working world shaken up and we expect them to just do everything perfectly after a few hours of training. Hand-holding during the first two weeks is essential to a successful project. Spending time on the floor shows that we care about them.

"The warehouse system must be an accurate reflection of the physical world. Nothing about it is theoretical. When a box moves, scan it so that it moves on the system too."

"At Cradle we believe in the elegance of simplicity. Keep the software simple, implement between 80% and 95% of the available functionality, and ensure that everyone understands that the system is nothing without the operators and you may just end up with an efficient, well-run, accurate warehouse." says Craig Collins, Project Director at Cradle.

Unlike the Tier One multi million rand WMS solutions, Granite WMS is designed for companies who want simple effective warehousing software that does not cost as much as a Ferrari.

Granite Warehouse Management System is developed by the software division of Cradle Technology Services. It is designed to integrate into Pastel Evolution, Sage ERP 300 and Microsoft ERP products. The product is sold through ERP vendors and resellers throughout Africa.

Cradle Technology Services is a leader in providing Barcode and RFID solutions and equipment in southern Africa.
