Digicel unhappy with free VoIP services

The Jamaican mobile operator Digicel is considering banning unlicensed free voice-over-internet protocol (VoIP) services such as Viber. The operator's sister company in Haiti recently blocked access to free VoIP apps and a report from the Jamaica Gleaner says the Jamaican unit is considering a similar approach. Parent company Digicel Group has labelled the free services as 'parasitic', and the cellco says it is now holding talks with VoIP providers to reach a formal agreement over network traffic routing.
