June 30--Noteworthy: Pennsylvania first lady Susan Corbett presented McWherter with one of two Purchase Awards this year on behalf of the State Museum of Pennsylvania. His black-and-white photograph of tree roots titled "Reach," taken at Muir Woods in California, will become part of the museum's permanent collection and be on extended display as part of its public exhibition. The 47th annual exhibit runs through Sept. 14 and includes works from 114 artists.

Residence: Derry

Age: 57

Family: Wife, Kimberly McWherter, and sons, Ian and Nathaniel

Occupation: Artist and art teacher at Derry Area High School

Education: Bachelor's degree in fine arts from Seton Hill University

Background: McWherter has taught art at Derry Area for 18 years and has a studio/lab in his house. He specializes in landscapes, either black-and-white or color, that tend to be expressionistic.

Quote: "As an artist, I like drawing. When I picked up a camera for the first time -- I guess I was 12 or 13 -- it was like drawing with light, which is what photography means. These roots were along the trail where you walk to see the big trees. They almost looked like they were glowing. The sun was hitting them just right."
