June 30--REDLANDS -- It was a black-and-white affair under the stars at Esri on Saturday night for the annual Associates of the Redlands Bowl gala.

A day after the 2014 season of the Bowl's Summer Music Festival began with a performance by the San Bernardino Symphony conducted by Frank Fetta, around 350 people put on their best black and white duds for a night to raise money for the music institution and scholarships for young artists.

Thousands were raised from the effort between ticket sales and auctions, which included a signed jersey from soccer star Landon Donovan, a "Gentlemen's Pack," which included eight tickets to the Ice House Comedy House, a "We Love Redlands" basket filled with goodies, and a trip to see a taping of "Wheel of Fortune."

Cooking guru Martha Green brought the laughs to the event during the gala's live auction, which saw a "Great Balls of Fire" package complete with six tickets to a Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim game and a comprehensive orthodontics package donated by dentist Chad Hawkins of Little Smiles Pediatric and Orthodontics Dentistry in Yucaipa.

"We are very pleased. It's going really well," said Suzie Sternberg, who co-chaired the event with Alexis Spencer and Randi Taube. "People seem to be having a good time, so that's really nice."

Several longtime supporters of the Bowl spoke, often remarking on the legacy Grace Stewart Mullen left on the city after founding the Redlands Community Music Association and the annual festival, which celebrates its 91st season this year.

Mullen was also represented in the event's decor as one section of the auction area inside Esri's cafe featured a quote from the woman, "Music is for everyone."

The annual gala aims to raise money to help the Redlands Bowl Summer Music Festival, as well as the Caroline S. Pike Young Artists Scholarships.

Saturday's gala was held at Esri for the first time and featured delectables prepared by Chef Kevin Holloway of the company's Eurest catering.

The event's co-chairs were hoping to raise at least $55,000 through ticket sales, individual donations and auctions.
