Spotlight: Through Polish eyes

June 29--Here are a few exhibitions to take in as the Fourth of July approaches:

Through Polish eyes

"The U.S. in Polish Historiography and Periodicals from 1764-1919" opens at 9 a.m. today at the El Paso Museum of History. It illustrates how the United States was perceived by Poles during its formative years.

The exhibit is composed of materials from the collection of the Warsaw Public Library, including newspapers, memoirs, photographs, and drawings. Particular attention is given to the American Revolution, the U.S. Declaration of Independence and Constitution, Polish immigration after the November uprising in 1830, Polish participation in the U.S. Civil War, American relief efforts for Poland during World War I, and the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1919.

The film "The Fourth Partition" will be screened at 1 p.m. today at the museum. The title refers to the years between 1870 and 1920, when Poland was divided among Russia, Austria and Germany, and more than 4 million Polish immigrants reached the United States, particularly Chicago.

The exhibit and film are sponsored by the General Casimir Pulaski Society of El Paso.

'America the Beautiful'

"America the Beautiful," an exhibition of works by more than 20 area artists, is on display through July 26 at the El Paso Art Association'sCrossland Gallery, 500 W. Paisano.

The show is by Art Association members and nonmembers alike. The gallery is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays and from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays.

'Happy Birthday America!'

"Happy Birthday America!," a juried exhibition of Americana-themed works by local artists, will open with a reception from 2 to 4 p.m.July 6 at the International Museum of Art, 1211 Montana. The reception will feature an appearance by Uncle Sam. Also on display will be war memorabilia.

The exhibit continues through July 27.
