Horsing Around

June 29--Fourteen riders braved the windy conditions to take part in the fourth annual North Texas Heritage Classic Horse Races on Saturday afternoon at the Call Field East track.

The event benefits the Museum of North Texas History, with proceeds going to the upcoming "Jenny to Jet" exhibit that will be housed at Wichita Falls Regional Airport.

The location, between Kickapoo Airport and Henry S. Grace Freeway, is the perfect location, according to Charles Campbell, executive directory of the museum.

"It requires an unusual layout. You have to have 1,500-1,800 feet straight away," Campbell said. "You can't find a lot of places with that and still have room for parking.

"And, this is the area where we did fly the Jenny, so it all kind of fits together."

The races -- billed as the only race of its kind in North Texas -- were run two horses per race, with the best times in the second preliminary round advancing to a prize round.

Horses enter the track at the finish line and walk down the 600-foot track until they cross the finish line. Then, once the starter drops the flag, the riders do a 180-degree turn and race back down the track.

Ali Boswell, of Burkburnett, won the event for the third straight year -- the second straight on Willie Wonnka, an American quarter horse.

This year she won a photo finish in her prize round race with Bobby Biddy by 0.12 seconds, posting a time of 12.25. Boswell won the top prize of $1,000, as well as $200 for top time in the first round.

Biddy's time placed fourth. Kayla Williams finished with a time of 12.28 for second and $500, and Ashley Gille took third and $300 with a time of 12.35.

While only the top three finishers won money, the time separating third through fifth was .04 seconds. Brittney McMullen took fifth place with a time of 12.39.

"This is such a fun event, and everybody that comes out can't wait to come back out next year," Campbell said.
