United States : ATK secures contract from LOCKHEED MARTIN SPACE SYSTEMS

ATK has announced the winning of a contract from Lockheed Martin Space Systems to deliver the UltraFlex solar arrays for NASAīs InSight Lander mission that will place a lander on Mars in 2016 to study the red planetīs deep interior.

The mission will give a better comprehending of the processes that planned the rocky planets of the inner solar system, including Earth.

InSight is an abbreviation for Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport. It will utilize sophisticated geophysical instruments to explore deep beneath the surface of Mars, discovering the fingerprints of the processes of terrestrial planet formation, and measuring the planetīs vital signs its pulse (seismology), temperature (heat flow probe) and reflexes (precision tracking).

InSight is controlled by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology, for NASAīs Science Mission directorate. Lockheed Martin will construct and operate the spacecraft.
