June 27--SHIPPENSBURG -- A scaled-down opera performance July 24 will be a first for the Shippensburg Symphony Festival Series, a series of three musical performances that takes place each July in H. Ric Luhrs Performing Arts Center at Shippensburg University.
Maestro Robert TreviÑo will return as guest conductor for all three performances July 10, 17 and 24. Each concert will begin at 7:30 p.m.
Pianist Stephen Hough is the featured performer in Concert I on July 10.
Concert II on July 17 will feature violinist Joshua Bell.
Guest soloists on July 24 will perform a semi-staged production of Beethoven's only opera, "Fidelio," with the Shippensburg Festival Symphony & Chorus.
"The Festival Chorus, consisting of some of South Central Pennsylvania's finest vocalists, has been enlarged for this production," said Dr. Blaine Shover, artistic director for the series and professor of music at Shippensburg University.
Liberty & Love
This season's series highlights the relationship between Liberty and Love. The musical pieces selected provide insights into the many sacrifices that have been made throughout history to fight for one's liberty for the sake of gaining love.
"The Shippensburg Festival Symphony is unique in that it brings together some of the finest orchestral musicians from Philadelphia, New York, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C., to play under the baton of Robert TreviÑo, one of the youngest and most brilliant conductors today," said Shover. "We are also very excited about bringing to the people of South Central Pennsylvania world-renowned soloists such as Stephen Hough and Joshua Bell at unheard of ticket prices, far below those of other venues."
Individual tickets are $35$25 & $20 for Concerts I and III; and $45, $35 & $25 for Concert II.
For tickets, call the Luhrs Center box office at 477-7469 or buy online at www.luhrscenter.com. Children's tickets are priced at $10 for children 18 and younger for Concerts I & III only (Children's tickets are not available online).
