Polish consulate honors members of Turkish art community

ISTANBUL (CIHAN)- The Consulate General of Poland honored several important names from the art community in Turkey for their contributions to the promotion of Poland during the 600th anniversary of the establishment of Polish-Turkish relations, in a ceremony in Istanbul on Thursday.



Nazan ÖlÇer, the director of Istanbul's Sakip Sabanci Museum (SSM), which hosted the exhibition "Distant Neighbor, Close Memories: 600 Years of Turkish-Polish Relations" from March 7 to June 15, was presented with Officer's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland for the museum's distinguished contributions to the two countries' relationship.



The consulate awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland to Özalp Birol, the director of Istanbul's Pera Museum, which presented a film program about the Polish cinema; GÖrgÜn Taner, the general director of the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (IKSV) which has given a prominent place to Polish culture in its music and theater festivals; and Yurdaer Altintas, a professor from Isik University's Faculty of Fine Arts, who contributed to an exhibition about the Polish graphic designer Andrzej Pagowski.



Yesim GÜrer Oymak, the director of IKSV's Istanbul Music Festival, curator GÜlden Akinci, poet-photographer AkgÜn Akova, art critic-journalist Hayati Asilyazici, music critic Evin Ilyasoglu and lawyer Rona Aybay were awarded with the Bene Merito Medal.



Gen. Mieczyslaw Cieniuch, the ambassador of Poland to Turkey and one of two high-profile Polish officials to attend the ceremony, along with Consul General Miroslaw Stawski, said that the 600th anniversary of relations had contributed to the recent interaction between Poland and Turkey, which has focused on art and history. Cieniuch thanked all those who have contributed to the development of relations between the two countries.
