Tokyo stocks open slightly lower on losses on Wall St., stronger yen

Tokyo stocks opened slightly lower Friday as investor sentiment was dented due to overnight falls in U.S. stocks and a relatively strong yen.

In the first 15 minutes of trading, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average fell 39.40 points, or 0.26 percent, from Thursday to 15,269.09. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was down 2.79 points, or 0.22 percent, to 1,260.64.

Major decliners included mining, oil and coal products as well as insurance shares, while pharmaceuticals and utility issues gained ground.
