Introduction of sustainable pasture management system in mountain communities of Syunik region

June 26, 2014

Grantee:Strategic Development Agency NGO Country: Armenia Area Of Work: Land Degradation Operational Phase: Phase 5 Grant Amount: US$ 50,000.00 Co-Financing Cash: US$ 52,780.00 Co-Financing in-Kind: US$ 21,420.00 Project Number: ARM/SGP/OP5/Y3/STAR/LD/14/32 Start Date: 6/2014 End Date: 5/2015 Status: Not active yet Description : The project aims to promote sustainable land use/management practices in Angeghakot, Tolors and Salvard communities of Syunik region to sustain agro-ecosystem functioning and livelihoods of local population. Agriculture, in particular livestock sector, is a major economic activity providing employment and livelihoods for 2,400 members of the project target communities. Agro-ecosystems, including pastures, grasslands and other landscape types, provide multiple ecosystem services that are critical for maintaining sustainable livelihoods at the community level. However, project target communities, as many in Armenia, do not have an adequate capacity to implement good practices for crop and livestock production that contribute to enhancement of multiple agro-ecosystem services. Project communities are rich in pasturelands and grasslands (over 12,800 ha), in the meantime only 1/3 of pastureland is being used. Due to underdeveloped infrastructure, remote pastures and grasslands are not commonly used therefore close pastures are being overexploited which negatively affects both: quality of grass/fodder and land degradation. On the other hand, remote pastures are underused (because of distance and access), but also are at risk of degradation: in this case due to spreading around of bushes and the displacement of valuable pasture flora by lichens. The project activities aim to foster participative bottom-up planning processes to ensure inclusive participation of all concerned stakeholders/target groups in designing and implementation of integrated Pasturelands (including grasslands) Management System in the selected communities. The project will undertake activities for mobilization and capacity building of communities to develop Pasture Management System for communal pasturelands. Pasture Management System will define institutional framework for implementation of Pasturelands Management System in the selected communities (with set functions and responsibilities of different actors) based on the best local and international experiences. In total 30 inhabitants of project communities (pasture users/farmers, community counsel and staff of local authorities) will gain knowledge and skills on pastures assessment and monitoring, to design/adjust communal pastures management plans based on pastures monitoring results, rotational grazing plans as well as appropriate set of documents for implementation and control mechanisms of newly introduced Pasturelands Management System. Over 500 community members will raise awareness on global environmental problems and benefits of good practices for crop and livestock product
