BRIEF: El Paso Electric warns customers of scam

June 26, 2014

By Adriana M. ChÁvez, El Paso Times, Texas

June 26--El Paso Electric officials are warning customers about a recent phone scam.

Officials said they have seen an increase in customer complaints about scam artists threatening to cut off services if a payment isn't made immediately. Scammers have also asked for personal information or demanded payment for current balances.

Officials said customers should be suspicious of callers asking that payments be made using a prepaid debit card. El Paso Electric will accept different payment methods through several authorized payment options, but the company does not require the use of a prepaid debit card. Officials also discourage customers from providing personal and confidential information over the phone unless the customer initiated the contact.

Anyone with questions about the authenticity of a call, or about anyone claiming to represent El Paso Electric, is asked to call 915-543-5970, 575-526-5555 or 1-800-351-1621.
