June 26--MERCERSBURG -- An Americana and patriotic program will be performed on Mercersburg Academy's carillon July 4 by the academy's resident carillonneur, James "Jim" Brinson.
The recital will begin at 3 p.m. from Mercersburg's Swoope Carillon in the Irvine Memorial Chapel along East Seminary Street. The recital is free and can be heard from the campus Quad.
Patriotic songs such as "The Star-Spangled Banner" and "America the Beautiful" will be performed along with American folk songs such as "Cindy," "He's Gone Away," and "Blow the Man Down."
Songs from the Civil War years, such as "Lorena" and "Goober Peas," and American hymn tunes such as "Simple Gifts" and "Followers of the Lamb" will also be performed.
Brinson has been on Mercersburg Academy's music faculty since 2003 and took on the role of carillonneur in 2009. He is a graduate with distinction from both Union Theological Seminary's School of Sacred Music and Rhodes
A member of the American Guild of Organists, the American Choral Directors Association, and an associate member of the Guild of Carillonneurs in North America, Brinson is experienced in choral arts, organ performance, and music history.
