June 26--BEAVER -- The parks of downtown Beaver will become a playground for artists and the community during a new festival taking place Friday and Saturday.

The Artists Festival of Beaver County is a free event, featuring live entertainment by For Those About to Rock Academy, the professional Undercroft Opera, the Amiche Artists, singer-songwriter Laura Neely and more.

Visitors can join in the art-making with face painting, giant bubble making, sidewalk chalk art, and an interactive story time, or simply watch artists demonstrate their work and talk about their craft. Participating artists include Stray Cat Studios from Beaver Falls, illustrator Nate Taylor, visual artist Lindsey Dietz and poet Becky Stout.

"Our festival is to celebrate artists of all types ... painters, writers, pottery, performers, singers," said Beaver County native opera singer Lara Lynn Cottrill, co-founder with Sarah Carleton of Amiche Artists, a local performance group hosting the festival.

On Friday night, Amiche will perform its colorful "Shakespeare's Women" show, mixing the talents of Carleton, an actress, and Cottrill, an opera singer.

"We call it a Shakespearian mash-up," Cottrill said. "There's happy moments there's tragic moments so you've got it all."

The festival's other free events include Yoga in the Park on Friday, and an 8 p.m. Saturday performance by local rock band the Unemployed.

Festival hours are 3 to 9 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday. Those who linger Saturday night can find a spot to watch the Beaver County BOOM fireworks at 9:45, lit above where the Beaver and Ohio rivers meet.
