USHCC Applauds Senate Committee’s Approval of Castro HUD Nomination; Encourages Full Senate Cooperation

June 25, 2014

WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- The United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (USHCC) applauds the Senate Banking Committee for voting 16-6 this morning to approve Mayor Julian Castro’s nomination for Secretary of Housing and Urban Development. The USHCC has supported Mayor Castro’s nomination since the beginning, and is currently working with allied organizations, the administration, and members of Congress to facilitate a speedy confirmation.

“The USHCC, the leading advocate for 3.2 million Hispanic businesses and 221 major US corporations, commends the bipartisan spirit exhibited by Democratic and Republican members of the Senate. Senator John Cornyn set a bipartisan tone during last week’s hearing, and we are very pleased to see Senators Richard Shelby of Alabama, Bob Corker of Tennessee, Mike Johanns of Nebraska and Dean Heller of Nevada vote in favor of Mayor Julian Castro’s nomination,” said USHCC President & CEO Javier Palomarez. “Our association urges this process to proceed without drama or delay, and will continue to work with NHLA, the administration, and the Senate to ensure Mayor Castro’s speedy confirmation.”

During his term in office, San Antonio has been hailed as one of the fastest-growing large cities in America. Since 2010, Castro has lead 17 new residential projects within the downtown area alone, and raised almost $400 million dollars in private capital to build over 2,700 new housing units throughout San Antonio.

“The USHCC believes Mayor Castro is the best American choice for this post,” said USHCC Chairman Marc Rodriguez. “We are confident that with his proven ability to deliver for one of our fastest growing cities, Mayor Castro will be able to sustain and accelerate the pace of progress our housing market and urban communities have enjoyed under Secretary Donovan.”
