Solomon Islands : ADB s loan agreements to bolster energy access in SOLOMON ISLANDS

June 25, 2014

The Solomon Islands will get the benefits from the Asian Development Bank's loan agreements.

The agreements will help the government to bolster energy access and renewable energy generation in Auki, the capital of Malaita province. The project is supposed to help the Solomon Islands Electricity Authority in developing hydropower generation to exchange diesel generation in the third-largest load centre in Solomon Islands, and expand the distribution grid to peri-urban families.

According to ADB vice-president Lakshmi Venkatachalam , the Fiu River hydropower plant would almost entirely displace diesel generation in Auki. "In achieving this, the project will deliver more reliable and cleaner power to Auki and at the same time boost the local economy," she stated.

Ms Venkatachalam inked the agreement that comprised of a $US6million ($F11m) loan and $US6m grant with Solomon Islands Minister for Finance and Treasury Rick Houenipwela.
