June 25--Ten local artists came together last Friday evening to celebrate the opening of The Gallery on Craven Artists' Co-Op at the Isaac Taylor House.

New Bern Mayor Dana Outlaw cut the ribbon to officially welcome the new gallery to downtown.

The artists attending included Bernice Abraham, Brandy Baxter, Jon Derby, Jay Manning, Dara Morgan, Dottie Miller, Becky Preece, Kevin Strickland and Sarah Thrasher.

The Gallery on Craven Artists' Co-Op is one of the many projects supported by Community Artist Will, a nonprofit dedicated to expanding the arts in the community.

Under the leadership of Michaele Rose Watson and CAW, a group of artists began meeting to begin forming what is now called The Gallery on Craven Artists' Co-Op.

In the beginning, all they had was the space to rent and the novel idea to create a fun opportunity to share their individual creative works.

With each meeting, more progress was made toward becoming a functioning gallery.

Every artist contributed with either extra time, money, initiative, furnishings, donations, expertise and creative talents. That made it possible to go from a great idea in the beginning of March to opening the Gallery in April of 2014. The work included a name, a logo, signage, operating procedures, installation, display tags, equipment, furniture, and last, but not least, a way to take credit card payments!

The artists share leadership, ideas, expenses and gallery sitting hours.

Currently there are 10 different artists who work in a variety of mediums, which include graphic design, pop art, blown glass, acrylic, oil, watercolors, photography, fused glass and jewelry.

In July, an 11th artist working in stained glass and hand woven baskets will be joining.
