June 24, 2014

Tokyo stocks opened lower Wednesday as investor sentiment was sapped by overnight declines in U.S. shares due to lingering concerns about the conflict in Iraq.

In the first 15 minutes of trading, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average fell 34.83 points, or 0.23 percent, from Tuesday to 15,341.41. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was down 1.26 points, or 0.10 percent, at 1,267.24.

Major decliners included pulp and paper, insurance as well as real estate shares, while utility, mining and marine transport stocks gained ground.
