Quick Kicks: Brain tumor stars in new musical production

June 24--Here is a roundup of entertainment news and events for this week:


Buzz Cason to perform

The Rockabilly Hall of Famer who wrote the 1967 Robert Knight hit "Everlasting Love" will drop by the Elkhorn area for a concert Saturday, June 28.

Buzz Cason will perform at 7 p.m. at The Barn at La Grange, a small venue that specializes in house concerts. It's located on North Sandy Lane near East 3rd Avenue, Elkhorn.

Cason has worked with artists from Elvis Presley to Jimmy Buffett, and his songs have been covered by a host of bands, including U2 and Pearl Jam. His music will be featured in a July 5 tribute at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in Nashville.

Church gets patriotic

If you want to gear up for the Fourth of July a little early, check out the free patriotic concerts at 7 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, July 1-2, at Rock Prairie Presbyterian Church, 8605 E. County A, Janesville.

The Rock Prairie Choir will perform patriotic songs, and Chapter 236 of the Vietnam Veterans of America will present the colors.

Pie and custard will be served after the concerts. A free-will offering will be taken to help veterans.

Stoughton plans fest

The historic Stoughton Opera House has designed a new fundraiser: the Catfish River Music Festival.

The festival opens at 6 p.m. Thursday, July 3, and offers lots of free live music through Sunday, July 6, at the Rotary Park gazebo outside the theater, 381 E. Main St., Stoughton. Some evening concerts--Gillian Welch, Greg Brown and Iris DeMent--are ticketed events.

The free music lineup includes Robbie Fulks, Whitney Mann, Count This Penny and Mama Digdown's Brass Band, among others. Food and local artists also will be featured.

Musical stars a tumor

"What's Wrong with Rex," an original musical about Rex Wilkinson and the brain tumor that changed everything, will take the stage this weekend at the Christian Arts Centre of Chapel on the Hill in Lake Geneva.

Showtimes are 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday, June 28-29, in the arts center, located west of Lake Geneva on Highway 50 at Cisco Road. Tickets are $10. Call 262-245-9122 or go to


Get fair tickets

Tickets are now available for grandstand acts at the Rock County 4-H Fair, which runs July 22-27 in Janesville.

These concerts require tickets beyond the price of fair admission: George Thorogood on July 22, $15; The Swon Brothers with Danielle Bradbery on July 23, $10; Scotty McCreery on July 24, $10; and Charles Esten and Clare Bowen from ABC's "Nashville" on July 25, $10.

Lonestar on July 25 and Zac Matthews on July 27 are free with the price of admission.

Tickets go on sale Tuesday, July 1, for Beer & Spirits, the annual Halloween-themed tasting festival at Grand Geneva Resort and Spa in Lake Geneva.
