June 24--Wisconsin ranks 20th, nationwide, in the amount of private equity funding invested in 2013, according to a report by the Private Equity Growth Capital Council, in Washington, D.C., released Tuesday.

The report says private equity firms invested $5.9 billion in 37 Wisconsin companies last year.

Wisconsin has about 400 companies backed by private equity, the council says.

Nationwide, private equity and growth capital firms invested $443 billion in more than 2,300 companies in 2013, up 27 percent over the year before. Texas received the largest amount of investment.

The figures do not include venture capital or angel funding, which often go to earlier stage companies.
