BRIEF: Construction delayed on north Bismarck retail development

June 24, 2014

By Jessica Holdman, The Bismarck Tribune, N.D.

June 24--The construction of a new retail center in north Bismarck has been put on hold, but should be up and running again soon.

Construction of Hay Creek Shops north of Bismarck's north Wal-Mart has been on hold for several weeks after the developer, Woodmont Co., defaulted on the land purchase.

Landowner Ron Knutson said he thinks some of Woodmont's financing fell through but he is negotiating a deal with another developer. He said the potential new developers are a group based in North Dakota. The deal is not finalized, but he said it is about 95 percent likely.

Knutson said he expects construction to resume in a couple of weeks. All of the stores that had committed to coming previously, including Gordmans, Dick's Sporting Goods, Michael's, Bed, Bath & Beyond and Ulta Cosmetics, will still be part of the development, he said.

In a previous Tribune story, Bismarck City Planner Jason Tomanek said the Hay Creek development will take up about 33 acres on the east side of Highway 83 extending north up to the residential properties near Brookside Lane.

"I'm excited to see these new stores in Bismarck," Knutson said. "You got to have a forward thinking attitude."
