Philippines : UN expects ASIA to make huge investments in renewable energy

June 22, 2014

A United Nations (UN) expert has announced that Asia would make massive investments in renewable power in five to ten years.

Dr. Kandeh Yumkella, special representative of the UN secretary-general, while addressing reporters at a roundtable discussion at the Asian Development Bank (ADB), said Asians will ride the clean energy wave.

He said : "Why? Because Asia is facing the worst impact of weather events -- not only in Manila but also in other parts of Asia."

He noted that the emerging Asian middle class will also raise demand for green energy in Asia.

Yumkella said : "Over the next 10-20 years 1.5-2 million Asians are moving into the middle class. Your people will demand clean air. This is a middle class that wants a better life."
