June 22, 2014

The Nikkei stock index finished higher Monday, hitting a fresh five-month high, helped by positive Chinese economic data released in the morning, but the market was top-heavy due to selling by some investors following recent gains.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average ended up 19.86 points, or 0.13 percent, from Friday at 15,369.28, its highest finish since Jan. 29.

But the broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange finished 1.44 points, or 0.11 percent, lower at 1,267.48.

Major gainers included oil and coal products, air transport as well as nonferrous metal shares.
