N.Y. stocks rally, Dow hits record on optimism about the U.S. economy

June 20, 2014

New York stocks rallied Friday, with the Dow index rising for the sixth straight trading day to close at its highest level on growing optimism about the U.S. economy.

The 30-issue Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped 25.62 points, or 0.15 percent, to end at 16,947.08, edging above the record 16,945.92 set on June 10. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index added 8.71 points, or 0.20 percent, to 4,368.04.

Stocks drew buying as investors concluded from the Fed's policy meeting earlier this week that the U.S. central bank would not move soon to increase interest rates and that the economy would stay on a steady recovery path, a market source said.
