The story, which began with a 1990 children's picture book that inspired an immensely popular animated move in 2001, is set in a fairy tale world inhabited by the likes of Pinocchio, the Three Little Pigs, Peter Pan, the Three Bears and the Gingerbread Man.
Shrek, a large green ogre, occupies one little corner of the world, a swamp where he has lived alone since he was 7. As the story opens, a mob of fairy tale characters arrive in the swamp, sent there by Lord Farquaad, who rules the land from his capital in Duloc. Farquaad, it seems, hates fairy tale characters, dismissing them as freaks.
Unhappy to have to share his swamp, Shrek heads to Duloc to appeal to Farquaad, reluctantly acquiring a traveling companion, a motor-mouthed talking Donkey. Farquaad tells Shrek he can have his swamp back if he will perform a task: rescuing Fiona, a princess who Farquaad has decided he wants to marry but who is confined in a castle guarded by a dragon. Shrek agrees.
As the lovely, if occasionally self-absorbed Finoa,
