The Liberia Water & Sewer Corporation (LWSC) in partnership with the Government of Liberia (GOL) with funding from the African Development Bank (AfDB) has formally broken ground for a new project that will rehabilitate the Buchanan water treatment plant and provide running water to the people of the city of Buchanan by 2015.

The ground breaking ceremony, held on Friday, May 23, 2014, at the administrative building in Buchanan, marked the turning over of the water facilities to the contractors.

The program was attended by a cross section of jubilant citizens of Grand Bassa county and residents of the city of Buchanan, an array of government officials, AfDB Country Representative, Dr. Margaret Kilo; Chairman of the Board of Directors, Dr. Kimmie Weeks, Managing Director, Charles Allen, among others.

The Buchannan water system was vandalized during the 14 year-Liberia Civil Crisis. Out of the US$40 million 6.1 million will be used for the rehabilitation of the 3 capitals, which include Kakata, Buchanan, and Zwedru.
