June 02--The mermaids are back for the summer at Ripley's Aquarium of the Smokies.

The mermaids perform underwater in the Gatlinburg aquarium's Coral Reef tank. Shows daily are noon, 2 and 4 p.m. This year the aquarium is hosting seven "mermaids" -- swimmers who perform wearing latex mermaid "tails."

The aquarium also hosts 30-minute photo sessions with the mermaids at 11 a.m., 1 and 3 p.m.

Generally two mermaids perform in each show. The mermaid shows continue at the aquarium through Aug. 9.

The aquarium is located at traffic light No. 5 in Gatlinburg and open 9 a.m.-10 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9 a.m.-11 p.m Friday through Sunday. Admission is $26.99 for ages 12 and older, $15.99 for ages 6-11, $7.99 for ages 2-5. Children under age 2 are admitted free.

Currently, the aquarium also is showcasing its "slimy" animals in an exhibit entitled "Slime." The exhibit features aquatic animals that use "slime" to survive and includes more than 30 interactive areas. Animals shown in the exhibit include jellyfish and clownfish as well as slimy snails, slugs and worms.
