Access Bank Cup Takes Centre Stage

The prestigious Access Bank UNICEF Charity Shield Polo Tournament which galloped off in grand style last week, move to high gears this week with nine teams vying for the highly revered of Access Bank Cup.

The international charity polo fiesta that attracted over 20 teams this year, produced its first winner at the weekend, as Unity Polo team from Lagos beat all comers to win the debuting Fifth Chukker Cup. The Lagos side outpaced Kano Ibah Oil& Gas 41/2-3 in a fierce final to clinch the low-goal title.

The Access Bank Cup that has been part of the tournament for the fourth year running is billed to gallop off tomorrow with 10-12 medium-goal teams battling for the glittering prize.

Teams listed for action in the Access Bank Cup series include the defending champions, Kano RTC, former champions DeeBee Farms from Kaduna and a contingent of four fully armed Lagos teams.

The expected Lagos teams are Caverton, Lintex / Kashton, Lagos Ironclad and Lagos Shoreline/ARK. Rubicon, Huawei and Aero Vet / Sublime complete the Access Bank Cup cast that would square up in a battle royale throughout the week.

Traditionally holding at the foremost Fifth Chukker Lawns of Kangimi Resort in Kaduna, the 2014 edition of the charity event that attracts professionals from Argentina, Europe and the best Nigerian players is running from May 20 to June 7, 2014.

According to the Executive Director, Personal Banking, Access Bank, Victor Etuokwu, proceeds from sale of tickets, memorabilia at this annual tournament and in additional N10million donation from Access Bank, would be used to support UNICEF in its campaign against HIV AIDS pandemic projects for orphan and vulnerable children".

"This year's tournament is more than an affirmation of our commitment to socio-economic wellbeing of mankind and acknowledgement of the impact the initiative has had on the lives of the orphaned and vulnerable children northern Nigeria especially in Kaduna state; it is also an opportunity for providing special care for Access Bank's customers through our Private Banking services," he added.
