How the Dow Jones industrial average did Thursday

Major U.S. stock indexes finished mostly higher on Thursday, delivering another record-high close for the Standard & Poor's 500 index. It was the fifth straight gain for S&P 500 on a day when the market mostly drifted between small gains and losses before a slight recovery in the last half hour.

On Thursday:

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 14.84 points, or 0.1 percent, to 16,921.46.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index gained 2.50 points, or 0.1 percent, to close at 1,959.48.

The Nasdaq composite index slipped 3.51 points, or 0.1 percent, to 4,359.33.

For the week:

The Dow is up 145.72 points, or 0.9 percent.

The S&P 500 is up 23.32 points, or 1.2 percent.

The Nasdaq gained 48.67 points, or 1.1 percent.

For the year:

The Dow is up 344.80 points, or 2.1 percent.

The S&P 500 index is up 111.12 points, or about 6 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 182.74 points, or 4.4 percent.
