June 17--TROY -- It wasn't too long ago that Devon Franks was part of a graduating class at Troy High School.

At last week's commencement, he was back, but it wasn't to see a younger sibling, relative or friend walk across the stage.

The 21-year-old, who graduated from Troy High School in 2010, returned to Troy to perform a community concert as part of the band, Wendy Owens and Renegade. The concert was made possible by a $25,000 grant awarded last year from State Farm.

The community concert was being held as a "Thank You" to the community and all those who helped the Troy Junior/Senior High win the $25,000 State Farm Celebrate My Drive grant.

Held in the gym in the Commons Building, the concert began after commencement and was part of the senior all night graduation party.

Franks was thrilled to come back to Troy and perform.

"It feels great," he said. "It's a dream come true."

"It's pretty heart-pumping," he commented.

He said he was excited to show people what he has been doing the past few years.

Franks plays acoustic guitar and provides back-up vocals in the band, which has an album, "South by North."

The young singer was happy to be pursuing his dream.

"I'm going after it," he said.

As for long-term plans, Franks said he would love to tour on the East Coast, opening for mainstream acts.

He said that he was "pretty surprised" to be asked to come back to Troy and perform.

Franks said he was happy to be setting a good example for the graduates.

He encouraged them "to chase their dreams down."

Franks said he appreciated the support of the community.
