BRIEF: Conneaut Lake Park 'real economic development opportunity'

June 17--MEADVILLE -- The Economic Progress Alliance of Crawford County is asking the county and local taxing bodies for continued patience.

The redevelopment agency hopes to pay off the Conneaut Lake Park's$900,000 plus debt over the span of four years.

If taxing bodies do not agree, the park could be sold for back taxes this fall.

The Economic Progress Alliance hopes to channel $10 million to 15 million in public and private money into the park. Plans include rebuilding the Beach Club and Dreamland Ballroom and building a new performing arts center, said Mark Turner, executive director of the EPACC.

"If the taxing authorities' attitude is, 'We want our money now,' I completely appreciate that. They have been patient a long time. But we would be missing a real economic development opportunity if we don't do this," Turner said of turning the park around.

Conneaut Lake Park owes back taxes to two municipalities, Conneaut School District and Crawford County.

County commissioners said today that they will meet with representatives of the park's other school and municipal creditors to decide if they will support Economic Progress Alliance plans.
