Tokyo stocks open slightly higher on Wall St. gains

June 16, 2014

Tokyo stocks opened slightly higher Tuesday as market sentiment was buoyed by overnight gains on Wall Street thanks to brisk U.S. manufacturing output data for May.

In the first 15 minutes of trading, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average rose 79.26 points, or 0.53 percent, from Monday to 15,012.55. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was up 6.07 points, or 0.49 percent, at 1,240.75.

However, the market was top-heavy due to worries over the geopolitical risks in Iraq and Ukraine. Major gainers on the Tokyo market included insurance, precision machinery and real estate shares.
