Sindh govt to use branchless banking for scholarship distribution

Sindh Education department inked an agreement with Tameer Bank and Telenor Easy Paisa for distribution of scholarships among 0.45 million girl students of the province.

The agreement was signed here on Friday by Sindh Senior Minister of Education, Nisar Ahmed Khuhro, President Tameer Bank, Nadeem Hussain and representative of Telenor. Chief Programme Manager Reform Support Unit Saba Mehmood was also present.

Addressing the event, Nisar Khuhro said that an amount of Rs. 1.2 billion was allocated to distribute among 0.45 million girls students of class six to ten for their financial assistance and also to encourage and promote girls' education in the province.

Students from rural areas would get Rs.3500 each while urban students would be given Rs.2500 each, he said and added that distribution of scholarship amount through easy paisa would start in August 2014.

He said that the agreement has been inked to make process of money distribution more transparent as there were some complaints that students were not getting total amount through Post office.

The minister said a proposal of giving scholarships to primary school girl students was under consideration to enhance the enrolment ratio of schools.
