June 15--North Fourth's annual celebration of theater and dance will open with comedy sketches and Broadway choreography next weekend.

Performances by the Equilibrium Theater Company and the Buen Viaje Dance Company have been created in honor of House District 17 and Senate District 13 legislators and friends.

The Equilibrium Theater Company was founded in 2001 for adults with developmental disabilities committed to telling their stories. The 14 actors have been working throughout the past year to create and perform an original piece of theater. Past programs have leaned toward the serious, with scripts centering around issues of disability, artistic director Kate Costello said.

"In the past, we did a full-length play," she said. "This time, we decided on individual scenes to turn into skits."

Think "Saturday Night Live" without the satire, she added.

The six shorts starring 14 actors will incorporate the Marty Robbins classic "El Paso," a blind date, a rock star, a radio talk show host and the song "Good Morning Starshine" from the musical "Hair."

The 21 members of Buen Viaje ("good journey") are polishing a suite of Broadway numbers to include "Be Our Guest" from "Beauty and the Beast;" "One" from "A Chorus Line;" "Grease Lightning" from "Grease;" and "One Night Only" from "Dreamgirls." The choreography will mix jazz with theatrical dance, artistic director Bradd Howard said.

"They loved the idea, plus they're well-known numbers," he said.

A special opening from 6-9 p.m. on Saturday, June 28, will honor state Rep. Ed Sandoval, Rep.-Elect Deborah Armstrong, former Sen. Dede Feldman, Sen. Bill O'Neill, as well as VSA Arts president emeritus Orlando "Orlie" Sedilo and founding director Beth Rudolph.

North Fourth Arts is operated by VSA Arts of New Mexico. Affiliated with the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., the center is dedicated to full accessibility in the arts for people of all abilities, ages, cultures and income levels. For information, visit
