June 14--Campustown's annual family-friendly celebration returns for a fourth year today.

Summerfest in Campustown begins at 3 p.m. on Welch Avenue and continues through 9 p.m. The event includes live music, a 5K race, crafts, face painting, business tents, beer garden and a root beer garden.

For more family activities, businesses will offer a story time, bingo, button making and treat decorating.

Kim Hanna, director of the Campustown Action Association, which organizes the event, said a goal of the event is to showcase the district to the public and that it is a place for everyone in Ames.

This year, a total of 27 tents will be present, ranging from businesses to community organizations.

Kingland Systems, which is responsible for the redevelopment of the 2400 block of Lincoln Way, and 23Twenty, which is the new retail and residence building being constructed where First National Bank and Lorry's Coffee stood, will each have tents.

The beer garden is the one activity that will cost attendees money. The rest is free, with the exception of the 5K race.

The live music is comprised of artists from the area.

Drum corps group Isiserettes starts it off at 3 p.m. Area favorites Tony Bohnenkamp and then Sidecar Rallye will follow.

Des Moines-based indie group Mighty Shady performs before the headlining act Decoy.

The Des Moines-based pop rock group recently released the album "The Open Road."

The 5K, which costs $35, begins at 5 p.m. and participants can register until it begins. The route takes it from Campustown to the Ames Middle School and back again.

While the event isn't an official sesquicentennial event for the city of Ames, Summerfest will have some 150th ties, including a book signing by Ames City Councilwoman Gloria Betcher, who co-authored the new book "Ames (Images of America)."

On Sept. 26, Campustown will host the sesquicentennial event Dinkey Day.
