June 14--MT. VERNON -- The Harmony Roses Chorus will perform a special free concert at 2 p.m.June 21 in the Schweinfurth Museum at the Jefferson County Historical Village.
Rose Straeter, director of the group, said the show will feature songs from a wide range of genres, including contemporary, barbershop, gospel and patriotic songs.
The goal is to put on a concert with a little something for everyone, Straeter said.
"When you give a variety like that, you know your audience is going to be pleased," Straeter said.
Harmony Roses is an 18-member a cappella group that performs locally at hospitals, nursing homes, churches, community events and elsewhere. Its members come from Mt. Vernon, Woodlawn, Centralia, Sesser, Wayne City, Texico and Dix.
"We do a lot of different things and we enjoy that," Straeter said. "We have a lot of fun singing and sharing our music."
The group is a local chapter of Sweet Adelines International, an organization of women singers dedicated to "advancing the musical art form of barbershop harmony," states a news release from the Jefferson County Historical Society.
This is the third time the Historical Village has hosted a Harmony Roses performance, Straeter said.
Jamie Wheeler, director of community relations for the Historical Society, said she hopes the concert proves entertaining and informative for the audience.
In addition to singing, the group also tells stories during the show, Wheeler said.
"They're just excellent singers," Wheeler said. "It's just a fun musical program."
Some examples of songs that will be performed at the June 21 concert include: "Lean on Me," "Let it Be," "Don't Sit Under the Apple Tree," "The Star-Spangled Banner," "This is my Country," and "The Battle Hymn of the Republic."
Also performing at the show will be the No Doubt Quartet, which is made up of four members of the Harmony Roses.
The concert will last about 45 minutes. It is free, but donations to the Historical Society will be accepted.
