ENP Newswire - 13 June 2014

Release date- 12062014 - The chair of the Arts Council England, Sir Peter Bazalgette, has praised the role of universities in driving growth in Sheffield's creative industries, during a tour of the city's cultural industries quarter.

At a special preview of Sheffield Hallam University's degree show in the Sheffield Institute of Arts Gallery, Sir Peter said arts and culture was an intrinsic part of people's quality of life and a city's identity.

Sir Peter said: 'In the city of the future, which is where all economic growth's going to come from, arts and culture has a role to play in helping cities regenerate themselves.

'That is a connection not just to the quality of life, and to the benefits to society, it's also about the creative industries, which are growing much faster than the economy in general. Arts and culture supplies the talent base for the creative industries, so it's incredibly important and Sheffield gets that.'

The Arts Council chair also praised Sheffield Hallam's role in driving growth in Sheffield's thriving creative industries, which have an annual turnover of GBP1.1billion.

Sir Peter said: 'Universities are redefining their role at the moment, and they are concerned that their students have a fantastic experience, and have a great cultural quality of life in the time they're studying. That means investment in arts and culture in the locality, and you want arts and culture institutions that make a place where people will want to come and study, or indeed come and work.
