Hollywood Bowl launching a season of musical summer nights

June 13, 2014

June 13--A bucolic evening under the moon and stars, food and drink of your choice, and glorious music best describe Los Angeles' Hollywood Bowl, a timeless classic in its own right.

For more than 80 years, fans have flocked to the venue to enjoy all three.

This summer, the Bowl offers the opportunity to take in the communal experience at the 18,000-seat amphitheater in a variety of fashions -- from the pricey box seats and catered dinners to the cheap wooden benches and your own picnic baskets.

But the music is the same and -- thanks to wonderful acoustics and a terrific sound system -- can easily be heard throughout.

Meanwhile, large monitor displays allow you to focus in on what's going on onstage.

As for the edibles, who's to say your dishes and wines aren't tastier then the expensive ones?

And the L.A. night skies belong to all of us.

The season begins Saturday with a star-studded opening night for the 15th Annual Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame concert, culminating with fireworks. Being inducted this year are Broadway and screen star Kristin Chenoweth, the worldwide phenomenon Pink Martini orchestra and pioneer female rockers The Go-Go's.

Carol Burnett will be on hand to introduce Chenoweth. We talked to the Hollywood icon, as well as Pink Martini's Thomas Lauderdale about the honors. Proceeds from the concert benefit the Los Angeles Philharmonic and its education programs.
