June 12--If you have tickets to go see red-hot country star Luke Bryan at Verizon Wireless Amphitheater tonight or Friday night, congratulations.
The man behind recent hits like "Drink a Beer" and "Crash My Party" sold out both shows quickly. And if any other country singer has played Verizon for two nights instead of the standard one and done, it happened before my 12-year tenure reviewing country shows at the venue. Not to mention selling out both shows, leading to some sad social media pleas for area fans in search of seats.
Why is Bryan so big right now? Take his Georgia country boy charm, the made-to-sound-silky voice, the white teeth, big grin and good looks, and you have a superstar.
Never mind that he also has a knack for picking the right songs. Never mind that Zac Brown of the Zac Brown Band lambasted Bryan's "That's My Kind of Night"; fans make the ultimate judgment on songs and right now, Bryan can do no wrong.
Besides, anyone who listens to Bryan perform "Drink a Beer" and doesn't tear up, well ... listen again. There are hundreds of songs that say goodbye to a loved one, but Bryan brings a poignancy to it in part because of the deaths of both his brother and sister.
So while I may be SO OVER too many songs about tailgates and blue jeans (an earlier rant), Bryan is the complete package today in country music.
I'll be at tonight's show, and expect it to be one of the season's strongest. We'll see.
