Packet Design Launches Route Explorer System Version 11

June 17, 2014

By a News Reporter-Staff News Editor at Journal of Technology -- Packet Design has launched version 11 of its Route Explorerô System with support for layer 2 virtual private networks (VPNs). This is important for customers who need management visibility into these networks, including mobile operators who are upgrading to 4G/LTE services and service providers providing VPN services to enterprise customers. The new capabilities will enable them to deliver more robust service levels and make more informed and effective infrastructure investments.

Packet Design applied its core technology to the layer 2 VPN support, featuring real-time operational monitoring with alerts to error conditions and abnormal behavior, back-in-time forensic analysis, and forward looking what-if simulation of network changes, new workloads and failure scenarios.

With visibility into layer 2 VPN services, mobile operators will now have more flexibility in their infrastructure choices. They can deploy all new infrastructure or leverage existing infrastructure in their backhaul networks as they gear up for expanded 4G/LTE services.

Because MPLS encapsulation obfuscates layer 2 traffic, Route Explorer will also benefit service providers by providing management visibility into the layer 2 VPN services (Virtual Leased Lines or VLLs) they are providing over their IP/MPLS networks to enterprise customers. They will have the ability to support any customer's network infrastructure (ATM, E-Line, Frame Relay, SONET/SDH, TDM) and see how an individual customer's traffic is being routed across the MPLS network. For example, operations teams will be alerted if the state or the path of a VLL changes or if there is degradation in service availability. In addition, they can bring up new layer 2 VPN services quickly, with SLA provisions, to improve competitiveness.

"Packet Design supports the world's largest service providers, so including layer 2 VPN support is in direct response to their needs," said Cengiz Alaettinoglu, chief technology officer for Packet Design. "Combined with our management visibility into routing and traffic behavior for all IGP and BGP protocols, multicast, as well as traffic engineering tunnels, the addition of layer 2 VPN monitoring gives service providers of all types a rich set of management capabilities in one product, which is not a loosely integrated set of tools, but one comprehensive system where unforeseen interactions between these protocols can be analyzed."

Version 11 of the Route Explorer System also includes several other enhancements, including powerful contextual dashboards with drill-downs for enhanced operational and engineering workflows.

The entry cost of the Route Explorer System is $25,000. The entry cost of the VPN Explorer module, which includes the layer 2 VPN capabilities. is $25,000.

The company also announced in a separate release that it achieved triple-digit growth in the first quarter of 2014. About Packet Design Founded in 2003, Packet Design has pioneered route analytics to address today's network management challenges. The Route Explorer System monitors network-wide routing and traffic, providing operational alerts to failures and anomalies. Analyses and DVR-like replay capabilities speed troubleshooting, and routing and traffic modeling helps network planners predict the impact of changes and new workloads. Packet Design's unique real-time routing intelligence will be a critical enabler for the programmable and dynamic software defined networks of the future. The world's largest telecommunications companies, mobile operators, MSOs, service providers, enterprises and government agencies use the Route Explorer System to improve network availability and performance while maximizing the return on assets.
