June 12--Twenty-five oil paintings by Aberdeen'sJay Hopkins are on display through July 20 at the Granary Rural Cultural Center near Groton.

An artist's reception will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Granary Gallery. The artist will be present, the public is welcome, and refreshments will be served.

The exhibit, "The World Is My Stage," is presented by the Dacotah Prairie Museum and the Granary.

Born and raised in Havana, N.D., Hopkins teaches art history at Presentation College. She received her bachelor of fine arts degree at Minnesota State University Moorhead and her master's degree in fine arts from Colorado State University.

The artist sees her art as an extension of her North Dakota roots and relationships to the natural world.

"Nature and its inhabitants fuel my creative process. I attempt to weave together personal narratives with observations of my everyday world," she said in her artist's statement.

Hopkins has participated in the Emerging Artist Show at Fort Collins, (Colo.) Museum of Modern Art, along with group art exhibitions at the Rourke Art Museum Gallery in Moorhead, Minn., and the A. Jain Maranouchi Gallery in New York. She has been published twice in the Studio Visit Magazine: Volume 1 and 7. She recently made the top five of 2,000 artists for an opportunity of an International solo exhibition in Paris.

"The World Is My Stage" includes paintings that range in size from 8-by-8 inches to 38-by-48 inches. The paintings rely on oil paint and oil sticks, sometimes coupled with acrylic paint and collage materials which are applied with brush and scraper for textural effects.

"My paintings capture an image of my world that unites the fragmented experiences of time and place, the means by which humans record and communicate ideas," Hopkins said in the news release.
