Kericho town is set to get its first shopping mall as investors eye the increasing middle income earners in the tea growing region.

Construction of a mall dubbed Green Square has started following groundbreaking last Wednesday. It will be built at an estimated cost of Sh500 million and will have two floors.

The mall is associated with former minister Kipng'eno arap Ng'eny. It will host a Nakumatt Holdings' outlet as the anchor tenant. Directors of Green Square Mall said construction will be financed with a loan from the Kenya Commercial Bank.

"We were keen on having a building that would change the face of Kericho while catering to the emerging middle class," said Chris Ng'eno, a director of Green Square Mall.

The mall is next the building that formerly hosted Mid-West Hotel but which has since been taken over by a Kenyatta University campus. It will have 135 car park slots.

The 105,572 square feet mall will take 18 months to complete.
